Highlights of our most recent meeting:

  • The Library Board welcomed new member Debbie Larter.  Mrs. Larter comes to the Board as an HRM citizen representative, replacing Lorna Crawley, who stepped down after 8 years on the Board.
  • The tender for the update of the Library’s Master Facilities Plan was awarded to dmA Consulting, Planning & Management Services.  The firm has worked previously with the Library on the Woodlawn relocation project and is conversant in recreation, library and municipal strategic planning.  It is hoped the project will be completed by March 31.
  • The tender for fundraising counsel for the Central Library fundraising campaign was awarded to RBR Development Association Ltd.
  • A number of tenders for the Central Library have been recently awarded or are in the process of being awarded.  Work is currently being done to break up and remove pyritic slate on the site.
  • Preparations are well underway for the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.  Library programming is being developed as well as a virtual walking tour.  Work is being done in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Archives, Tourism Nova Scotia and Destination Halifax.
  • The Sackville branch has re-opened following a 5-week closure for renovation.  Chair Philip Moscovitch was emcee of the event and greetings were received from all three levels of government.  A new local history wall was unveiled in the entranceway.  Community response has been enthusiastic.
  • Staff have been looking into increasing security at Keshen Goodman in response to increasing frequency of incidents happening in and around the building.  A security guard has been hired on a 3-month contract to provide reassurances to staff and the public in the short term while permanent measures, including security cameras, are put in place.  The Library is looking to bring together area stakeholders to discuss the issue.
