Musquodoboit Valley kids, you won a national award!

Library receives award—and $5,000 cash prize—for TD Summer Reading Club

Halifax, NS–Broad and proud smiles were on Halifax librarians’ faces as Halifax Public Libraries – Musquodoboit Valley was named the first places  winner of the annual TD Summer Reading Club Library Awards. Amanda Fullerton, the community librarian responsible for the program in rural Musquodoboit Valley, dedicated the award to her young participants at an awards presentation in Ottawa last Friday, June 5.

“This award is the achievement of all of the children who came out to our programs,” said Fullerton.  “They proved that they have the same desire to read and, if given the same access as urban areas, they will bring us to win an award.”

Every year, TD recognizes a library’s summer reading club with a plaque and a cash prize of $5,000. They look for initiatives that are unique and produce results. Fullerton’s Musquodoboit Valley programming included a pop-up library, weekly meet-ups in a public park, events at recreation day camps as well as a travelling puppet show. As a result, youth responded in numbers: 48% more participants, 83% increase in goal completion with 78% rise in readers who exceeded their goals. In hard numbers, the 2014 TD Summer Reading Club in Musquodoboit Valley went from 434 books read in 2013 to 1238 in 2014.

“This award is well earned,” said Cynthia Gatto, Regional Manager of Children’s Services. “The youth showed such enthusiasm and Amanda worked extremely hard and creatively to make sure Musquodoboit Valley knew she was there and that she cares about all of them. We are very proud.”

Musquodoboit Valley is the second club from Halifax Public Libraries that has won the award. In 2012, Captain William Spry Public Library went home with the honour and investment. The $5,000 cash award will be reinvested into more projects that benefit the young residents of the Musquodoboit Valley area.
