The Books by Mail service is available to any resident of HRM who does not make regular use of Branch or Mobile Service and meets the following criteria:

1. The service is available to any customer who is not a resident in a branch catchment area.

2. The service is available to customers within rural branch catchment areas within the following criteria:

  • public transit to branch not available or not accessible
  • no car or access to car during branch hours
  • seasonal factors

3. The service is available to customers within all branch catchments within the following criteria:

3.1 Disability

  • unable to make use of a branch due to illness or disability which keeps customer homebound for a minimum of six weeks
  • disability may be short-term or long-term
  • includes conditions preventing driving or carrying
  • general infirmity due to age
  • not presently getting Homebound Service
  • caregiver responsibility preventing use of a local library during open hours

Materials are available in regular print, large print, or talking book formats.

Popular fiction or non-fiction may be selected from the July/August 2010 Update, a free list of recent materials sent to Books by Mail clients every two months.

Library clients with a physical, visual, or learning disability which prevents them from using print materials may register as talking book users. The Library's talking books can be played on any cassette player.
