Cassandra Clare's World of the Shadowhunters by Alison, Teen Blogger

With City of Bones, the first Shadowhunters film underway, what better time to read the books!

For those of you who have been living under a rock and haven’t heard of Cassandra Clare's phenomenal Mortal Instruments series, let me give you a quick summary. City of Lost Souls - book cover

Clary Fray is your typical 15-year-old New Yorker hanging out at an all ages club with her best friend Simon. That is until she starts to see people that no one else can see -- and no, they aren’t ghosts, they are called Shadowhunters. Shadowhunters are warriors whose goal is to rid the world of demons. The Shadowhunters that Clary has stumbled upon are teens right around her age named Jace, Alec, and Isabelle. The problem is that Clary shouldn’t be able to see them at all. She isn’t part of their world, or so she thinks. When her mother goes missing and her house is attacked by a demon, Clary finds herself learning about a whole other side of New York and the world that she had always thought to be fiction. In the series we see Clary and the others fall in and out of love, fight for what they care about, and defy the odds.

I really can’t do the books justice with a brief summary, but you get the gist of it. And to all those people out there that are panicking at the thought of another Twilight like relationship between two characters in two different worlds, DON’T WORRY. This love story is way more complex than boy loves girl / girl loves boy.

I was first introduced to these books when a friend had recommended them to me in the 8th grade; I only started to read them though when I was in grade 12. I don’t know why it took me four years to get around to reading them but I am really glad that I have! The story and the characters develop in a more complex way then most YA fiction does, which makes it an interesting read for younger teens, older teens and even adults. The other cool thing about this book is that it appeals not only to teen girls, although that is a large part of the fandom, but also to boys. It has action, demons, and good battle scenes, unlike many of its other teen urban fantasy counter-parts.

City of Bones - book coverThere are five books published in the series so far, and all of them start with the ‘City of…” in their titles. The first novel is called City of Bones, and is currently being created into a movie staring Lily Collins as Clary.

If you aren’t really into modern day fantasy and prefer something more historical, Cassandra Clare has got you covered. Her Infernal Devices trilogy takes place in Victorian era London. It's still in the Shadowhunter universe with some faces you might recognize from Clare’s other books.  And you won’t be lacking any Shadowhunter related reading anytime soon, as Clare has announced that she is writing another Shadowhunter series that will take place in L.A. called The Dark Artifices that will come out starting in 2015!

Here are some important dates to look forward to in the Shadowhunter world!

  • The third and final installment in the Infernal Devices trilogy, Clockwork Princess, hits shelves March 19, 2013.
  • The City of Bones Movie hits theaters August 23, 2013.
  • The sixth and final installment in the Mortal Instruments series, City of Heavenly Fire is scheduled to hit bookstores in March of 2014.
  • The first book in the Dark Artifices series, Lady Midnight, is coming sometime in 2015.

Here is a first look at the new film!
