Fantasy Author Extraordinaire! Diana Wynne Jones

The book world had sad news recently when Diana Wynne Jones, fantasy author extraordinaire, passed away in March 2011. She wrote many novels and series during her writing career from 1970s to today- her newest book, Earwig and the Witch will come out in Canada in July 2011.

Check out Charmed Life, the first book of Jones’ Worlds of Chrestomanci series. It’s the story of Cat Chant and his sister, who are sent to live in Chrestomanci Castle after the death of their parents. This castle is home to Chrestomanci, the overseer of twelve magical worlds.

Or have a look at Howl’s Moving Castle and its sequel House of Many Ways. Howl’s Moving Castle is about Sophie, who is the eldest of three sisters in a land where it is considered to be a misfortune. She is resigned to her fate as a hat shop apprentice until a witch turns her into an old woman and she finds herself in the castle of the greatly feared wizard Howl. House of Many Ways is about when Charmain is asked to housesit for Great Uncle William, the Royal Wizard of Norland. She is ecstatic to get away from her parents, but finds that his house is much more than it seems.

You can also watch an animated movie version on DVD of Howl’s Moving Castle, created by celebrated film maker Hayao Miyazaki. Also savour the animation of the movie in a 4-part graphic novel series based on the movie, all available at Halifax Public Libraries.
