Fast Five: YA Books On Screen (that you might not have seen) - Article by Danielle, Staff

The film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' Mockingjay, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 may be top at the box office, but here are five lesser-known film adaptations of teen books that you may also want to check out (and all five are available from the library).

  • The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
"Based on the best-selling novel by John Boyne, it's 'an unforgettable motion picture experience powerful and moving beyond words' (Pete Hammond, Hollywood.com). Bored and restless in his new home, Bruno, an innocent and naive eight-year-old, ignores his mother and sets off on an adventure in the woods. Soon he meets a young boy, and a surprising friendship develops. Set during World War II, this remarkable and inspiring story about the power of the human spirit will capture your heart and engage your mind."--Container.

  • Life, Above All
"Just after the death of her newly born sister, Chanda (12) learns of a rumour spreading through her small village near Johannesburg. It destroys her family and forces her mother to flee. Chanda leaves home and school in search of her mother - and the truth. Life, Above All is an emotional and universal drama about a young girl (stunningly performed by first-time-actress Khomotso Manyaka) who fights the fear and shame that have poisoned her community. The film captures the enduring strength of loyalty and a courage powered by the heart. Directed by South African filmmaker Oliver Schmitz (Mapantsula, Paris, Je T'aime), it is based on the international award winning novel Chanda's Secrets by Allan Stratton."--Container.

  • Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
"Proving that the power of true friendship knows no bounds, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a uniquely funny, uplifting tale that will steal your heart and leave you laughing! Meet Greg Gaines, a quirky teenager trying to coast through high school while making hilariously mediocre film parodies with his 'coworker' Earl. But when he is forced to spend time with a terminally ill classmate at the request of his meddling mother, Greg embarks on his most ambitious project yet: to let his guard down and connect with those around him in ways he never imagined."--Container.

  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower
"The Perks of Being a Wallflower is based on the wildly popular novel by Stephen Chbosky about a freshman named Charlie (Logan Lerman) who is always watching from the sidelines until a pair of charismatic seniors takes him under their wing. Beautiful, free-spirited Sam (Emma Watson) and her fearless stepbrother Patrick (Ezra Miller) shepherd Charlie through new friendships, first love, burgeoning sexuality, bacchanalian parties, midnight screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the quest for the perfect song."--Container.

  • The Spectacular Now
"Sutter Keely (Miles Teller), a high school kid with effortless charm and the self-proclaimed 'life of the party,' is having the perfect senior year - until he loses both his girlfriend and his part-time job. But when he meets Aimee (Shailene Woodley), the 'nice girl' next door, an unlikely romance begins as Sutter and Aimee struggle to overcome their differences and help each other through the many challenges of growing up."--Container.
