Inspired By... - Article by Emily, Teen Blogger

We all have people who inspire us: teachers, actors, actresses, writers, directors, etc. I have my fair share of people I look up to, and I thought it would be nice to share some of my author influences. I encourage you all to make a list of individuals who have served as positive inspirations for you as well!

John GreenThe Fault In Our Stars - book cover

Let’s just talk for a moment about John Green, shall we? Not only is he the bestselling author of several incredible books, including Looking for Alaska, Paper Towns, and The Fault in Our Stars, but he also has several online series, Crash Course being most notable in my mind. He’s brilliant, accomplished, and still remains humble despite everything he has achieved. I am awed by the fact that John Green has used his voice to create meaningful change and discussion in our generation. His Project for Awesome campaign, a chance for YouTubers to raise money and awareness for their favourite charities and non-profit organizations, raised $1,279,847 in 2014. What’s not to love about John?

Seriously I'm Kidding - book coverEllen DeGeneres

I know what you’re thinking. “Emily,” you’re saying, “Ellen is not an author, she is a talk show host.” I am happy to tell you that Ellen is far more than just a talk show host; she is an author, an actress, and recently the producer of a new HGTV show Ellen’s Design Challenge. I have watched every episode of her sitcom, Ellen (and you can too – the library has every season on DVD); I’ve watched both of her stand-up specials at least three times; and I’ve read all of her books, My Point… And I Do Have One, The Funny Thing Is…, and Seriously… I’m Kidding. Ellen is my inspiration to smile, laugh, and be a better person. She came out as the first openly gay woman in Hollywood during the run of her sitcom and lost everything as a result, yet today we know who she is and we love her for it. She picked herself back up and never looked back. If you have a bad day or you feel like nothing is going right, I suggest watching The Ellen DeGeneres Show. At the end of that hour, I promise you will feel a million times better.

TennessA Streetcar Named Desire - book coveree Williams

This playwright has inspired me not through the things he has done for the world, but through the characters he created, specifically Blanche DuBois from A Streetcar Named Desire. Years before his time, Williams wrote about mental illness, homosexuality, and domestic abuse in just one of his many plays. Blanche DuBois, a Southern belle who has lost much of what she held dear in life, is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder—though this is debated by scholars—after the death of her husband, Alan. When looking into Williams’ biography, you might find that he was gay and his sister, Rose, was committed to a mental hospital for her mental health in the 1950s. Williams wrote a touching play which incorporated many aspects of his own life, as well as created my favourite female character of all-time. I admire Williams’ bravery as well as his honesty and openness, something that required much courage in his time.

These are just a few of my favourites, and I hope you can draw inspiration from them too! I encourage you to focus on the positives in the world when you feel down, and maybe this list can be a very small source of light.
