New Reading for a New Year - Article by Cindy, Staff Blogger

I can't wait to see what 2014 will bring for new reading material. In the meantime, I may revisit some old favourites or catch up on older books that I missed reading when they came out. I've been browsing through the Teens Read lists at the Library and have found some gems that I just can't wait to explore:

This bSpies and Prejudice - book coverook, Spies and Prejudice by Talia Vance, has such an intriguing title for a mystery book. The story description is even more intriguing:

"Berry Fields is not looking for a boyfriend. She's busy trailing cheaters and liars in her job as a private investigator, collecting evidence of the affairs she's sure all men commit. And thanks to a pepper spray incident during an eighth grade game of spin the bottle, the guys at her school are not exactly lining up to date her, either. So when arrogant -- and gorgeous -- Tanner Halston rolls into town and calls her "nothing amazing," it's no loss for Berry. She'll forget him in no time. She's more concerned with the questions surfacing about her mother's death. But why does Tanner seem to pop up everywhere in her investigation, always getting in her way? Is he trying to stop her from discovering the truth, or protecting her from an unknown threat? And why can't Berry remember to hate him when he looks into her eyes? With a playful nod to Jane Austen, Spies and Prejudice will captivate readers as love and espionage collide." ~ Publisher.

Hmmmm...I  wonder about what happened during the pepper spray incident? How did her mother die? Who is this Tanner guy...a romance possibility or a deceiver? I love Jane Austen, so perhaps I will really appreciate the connection (can't wait to find out what that is!). This title is number one on my list of 'new' reads.

Sometimes, I don't feel like reading, but appreciate a good 'listen'. I love an audiobook because it allows me to just lay back, close my eyes, relax, listen to a good story and let my imagination take me away. There are lots of great choices in Digital Media and TumbleBookCloud. (TumbleBookCloud is great for listening and reading too!). I just found this 2012 title by Rachel Dewoskin that I can't wait to try:

Big Girl Small- book coverBig Girl Small (Audio Book)

Winner of the 2012 Alex Award

"Judy Lohden is your above-average sixteen-year-old: sarcastic and vulnerable, talented and uncertain, full of big dreams for a big future. With a singing voice that can shake an auditorium, she should be the star of Darcy Arts Academy, the local performing-arts high school. So why is a girl this promising hiding out in a seedy motel room on the edge of town?

The fact that the national media is on her trail after a controversy that might bring down the whole school could have something to do with it. And that scandal has something—but not everything—to do with the fact that Judy is three feet nine inches tall." ~Tumblecloud

Okay, singing is my idea of fun but being chased by national media and hiding out in a seedy hotel room? What is that all about? And a scandal that has to do with her size? Curiouser and curiouser.

So, if you are a curious person like me, have a look at my choices or choose your own from the Library's Teens Read lists. And, watch for hot new titles coming out in 2014.

Enjoy!
