The Grateful Dead by Zachary, Teen Blogger

Once in a blue moon you pick up a book that you fall in love with and you just CAN NOT put it down. It relates to your life so well that you wouldn't be surprised if you had written it yourself. I'd like to tell you about the book that does this for me.

Growing Up Dead is a novel by American author Peter Conners. I bought it at random in a local used book store, and the rest, they say, is history. Here is a little excerpt from the back of the book:

"Told against the backdrop of the American landscape of the late '80s to the mid-'90s, Growing Up Dead is the story of Peter Conners' journey from straight-laced suburban kid to touring Deadhead." [Deadhead or Dead Head is a name given to fans of the American jam band, the Grateful Dead ~ Wikipedia]

I have read this book, in all probability, 10 times, and every single time I read it, I'm blown away. The novel turned me on to the music of the band, Grateful Dead, who I now adore, and has opened my eyes to something more --  that there's something more to the world than just Halifax, Nova Scotia. There's a whole planet that's waiting to be explored!

Last year, I emailed Peter to tell him how fabulous I thought this book was, and a week later I received an email back, FROM PETER! I was overjoyed. How often do you get an email back from a celebrity? Like, never!

Here's a wonderful track from the Grateful Dead, called Friend Of The Devil.

If you would like to learn more about the Grateful Dead, check out their website or the following adult book and movie at your local library:

Living with Living With The Dead-book coverthe Dead : twenty years on the bus with Garcia and the Grateful Dead / Rock Scully with David Dalton.

Now that you know my favorite book, what's yours?

Comment by blog editor, Cindy: Sounds like Zachary is a real Deadhead! The Library doesn't have Growing Up Dead in the collection, but if you want to borrow it, we could track it down at another library and lend it to you. Just ask for an Interlibrary Loan.
