The Outsiders by Margaret, Teen Blogger

The Outsiders-book coverThe Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is an incredibly honest and achingly intense story about the rivalry between two gangs in the 1950’s. What makes the story so believable is the perspective: society seen from the point of view of a fourteen year old greaser.

The story is so honest because it was produced from the mind of a teenage girl. S.E. Hinton was young, merely sixteen when she began spilling her grief onto the paper. While originally her anger was a miscellany of emotion, she sorted her thoughts into a bestselling novel. She called it: “The Outsiders.”

The novel is a collaboration of experiences, occurring over the course of a few days. The story focuses on two gangs: the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs are the rich and slightly preppy kids from the west end of town. The Greasers are the poorer kids from the eastern, rougher end of the city. We see the conflict that breaks out between these two groups of teenagers. We see how they react to each other’s presence and how they go about breaking that line of hatred that so evidently separates them. It often leads to the question: is it the money that separates these two groups, or is it something else?

The story is like a puzzle. What led to such economic differences in this world? What caused such confusion and ignorance that these economic rivalries were seen as normal, rather than a symptom of an underlying problem? This book summed up life in the 1950’s perfectly The Outsiders-DVD coverand put the struggles of these teenagers into perspective.

For these reasons, experts have no choice but to deem this book a classic; one that will be remembered. It demonstrates the overwhelming thing that we must not ignore: we may live in this time, but history is neither to be unrecognized nor forgotten.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book. Because of its originality, no other novel matches the uniqueness of this one. Its popularity worldwide has been consistent, therefore making it readily available at many libraries and bookstores across the city.
