Things to Be Thankful For by Talia, Teen Blogger

Emoticon - ThanksgivingIt's Thanksgiving again!

To most people Thanksgiving means a day off of school, a good meal, and quality time with family but Thanksgiving is also about reflecting on all the wonderful things we have in our life and being thankful for each and every one of them. I personally believe that we should be thankful for everything that we have EVERY day and not just on Thanksgiving. I like to think of Thanksgiving as a day to celebrate all the things we are thankful for. And if you stop and think about it, you will be able to come up with quite a few.Emoticon hugging a tree

Living in Canada we are very blessed to have plenty of space, fresh air, lots of food, clean water, health care, and lots of learning and employment opportunities. We tend to take a lot of things for granted and just assume that everyone has them and that we don't need to be thankful for them because they are just things that are there. But people in other countries aren't so lucky.

We are privileged to be given the chance to learn to read and write. Canada has a 99% literacy rate whereas places like Mali and South Sudan only have around a 27% literacy rate. That means that only 1 in every 4 people would be able to read and write there. I can't imagine not knowing how to read and write. You would never be able to write letters or send e-mails, read a book, or even signs and labels. You wouldn't be able to read this blog post!

We should also be thankful for being able to get a good education. It may sound nice to not have to go to school, but if you weren't able to get an education you would never be able to go on to university, get a good job, or make a decent living for yourself. 61 million children around the world don't get the opportunity to go to school and make a better living for themselves.

We also have plenty of food and clean water. Tonight, 1 in 7 people in the world will go to bed hungry. Be thankful that you have access to as much food as you want and have plenty of clean water to drink.Emoticon Skateboarding

Aside from the necessities that we are lucky to have, we should also be thankful for the everyday things that make our lives more enriched -- friends who care, family members who are always there, being able to be involved in after-school activities, being on sports teams, pets, everything in your day that makes you smile!

One of the biggest things to remember to be thankful for is being able to live. It's a wonderful world, and you get to experience all of it. So don't waste a second of it. Make friends, spend time with your family, laugh lots, and don't forget to smile as much as you breathe. Stop counting your problems and start counting your blessings. The world is a wonderful place so go out there and enjoy it!
