What is Steampunk?
It is based on a world where steam power is still used, as well as anachronistic technology, gas-filled airships, clockwork automatons, and many other elements of Victorian influence. Originally, steampunk was set in Victorian England, but now, it can be any country, or even a far flung universe, or alternate reality.
The term was coined by K.W. Jeter in the late 1980's, but it can be traced back to Jules Verne, Mary Shelley, H.G. Wells and other 19th century authors.
Here are some current Steampunk books to check out:
Mortal Engines by Phillip Reeve
After the Sixty Minute War, the world has been ravaged by a nuclear holocaust that causes a huge geological turmoil with earthquakes and active volcanoes. In a world deprived of natural resources, people must fight to survive, so Nicholas Quirke designs a system where entire cities become immense vehicles called Traction Cities. These Traction Cities consume other cities!
This is the first title in an exciting series called Hungry City Chronicles.

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Something terrifying is waiting for Tessa in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos. Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person......this is an enthralling beginning to a new series!!!
