What Makes The Perfect Prom Dress? by Alison, Teen Blogger

Although some of us already have our prom dresses tucked away in our closets waiting for the big day, some of you might still be on the hunt for that perfect dress. I personally lucked out hugely and happened to stumble upon my perfect dress without really even looking, but not everyone is so lucky. What makes the perfect dress? That is the question that I am going to try and answer.

FIT: This is one of the most important factors when it comes to finding the perfect dress for you. Although you may already know that you want a pink dress with glitter, the more important part is to find a pink dress with glitter that flatters you body type. I think that it is safe to say that girls feel a lot better about themselves when they are wearing a super flattering piece of clothing. Not to say that the colour of the dress is not important, but in many ways it is secondary to the fit of the dress.

This is a little visual guide to help you understand which type of dress matches your body type!

COLOUR: Now that we have found the perfect fit for you we can focus on the colour of the dress. It is important to know which colours flatter your skin tone and which bleach you out or make you look drab -- two things that nobody wants on prom day! Try using this handy diagram to figure out what family of colours work best with your skin tone and then pick out your dress accordingly.

THE EXTRA TOUCH: Everyone wants their dress to be special, to have something extra that makes it different from someone else’s. This little extra touch can be found in a variety of ways. It really depends on your style and what you like. For some of you it might be a line of glitter going up the side of the dress, for another it could be a simple as having pockets in the dress. This is the beauty of the extra touch; it is completely up to you!

Now that you have found a great dress you need equally fabulous accessories. Once again, this is really up to you and what you like. You might be into really simple, small jewelry, or you might like big and bold costume jewelry. You might want a shawl or you might not; same with a bag.

One accessory that everyone needs is a great pair of shoes. When it comes to picking shoes don’t always try to find shoes that match your dress. Instead, pick shoes that compliment it. The other thing to think about is whether you want your shoes to be the star of the show or your dress. This comes back to finding shoes that are complimentary. If you want your dress to be the focus, try not to choose shoes that are flashier than it is! One last note in regard to shoes: there is a good chance you will end up at the Public Gardens at some point so remember that super high skinny heels will sink right into the soft grass!
