About Alderney Gate’s New Renovation

On November 1, 2021, we’re once more redefining public spaces with a new building project at Alderney Gate Public Library.

Come spring of 2022, you will be invited to enjoy a Library that feels bigger and brighter.

We're open!

New street entrance on Alderney Drive

Visiting the Library during the remodelling will take you down a new path. You'll find a temporary entrance on Alderney Drive, before the Bay 2 bus stop. This new street entrance will bring you into the heart of Library activity, where you will have access to all of the usual resources and technology.

Your favourite things in new spots

All of your favourite Library activities will be available to you throughout the renovation. We’ll be keeping the same open hours, too. New spots have been found for a few things, such as:

  • Holds pick-up and self-checks
  • Service desk
  • Public computers
  • Library return bins

Mostly after-hours

After temporary safety walls are built, much of the big construction work will take place after-hours and behind the walls. The aim of construction is to be out of sight, out of mind.

Reimagine with us

We’re removing barriers and breaking down walls—literally.

Reimagining your Library means taking what we’ve heard from you and turning these needs and wishes into what is possible. As a result, construction crews will be making some impressive alterations.

You can expect:

  • A new, wide-open main entrance without glass wall and doors.
  • Your Library lobby flowing seamlessly into the building's lobby.
  • An accessible public washroom open for use during and after Library hours.
  • A little counter with a sink for tasks, such as washing hands and filling up water bottles.
  • Functional, modern, and comfortable seating, similar to what you’ve been experiencing along the pedway.

The Alderney Gate Public Library renovation is one part of a larger Library’s Facilities Master Plan, which officially began in 2020, and is Phase 2 in HRM's Alderney Gate Recapitalization plan, opens a new window. The purpose of the plan is to ensure facility design meets the evolving needs of the public and staff. For Alderney Gate, these improvements include smart efficiencies and increased staff wellness. Abbott Brown Architects is the consulting firm and Bird Construction is the construction company operating with a budget of $1,580,000 coming from HRM’s capital budget.
