Volunteer with Literacy Help & Upgrading
Once a week, you'll meet with an adult learner for 2-3 hours to help them build confidence and skills in reading or math—perhaps helping them prepare for an educational milestone, like the GED. You'll be working with adults (19 years or older) who have been out of school for at least one year.
We'll help you tailor your sessions for people with a range of skills. For example, you'll be prepared to support a partner based on their needs, whether they are learning sound-letter relationships for the first time, or reading at a junior high school level.
Our Adult Literacy Program is offered in partnership with the Halifax Community Learning Networkopens a new window which provides training for tutors throughout the year. Working with you, our program coordinator will decide on a training plan to ensure you have all the tools needed to be a successful Literacy & Upgrading Tutor.

Volunteer with English Language Learning
The English Language Learning (ELL) program requires volunteers to meet for just a few hours a week to help people overcome language barriers and build cultural understanding. You'll be working with people from all over the world. Last year, more than 400 adults speaking 30 different first languages participated!
We offer a series of workshops for our ELL Volunteers including:
- ELL Basics
- Cultural Awareness Training
- ESL Literacy
- Goal Setting and Lesson Planning
Our program coordinator will work with you to determine which workshops and training plans are best for you.
