On February 23, 2019, Halifax Public Libraries' volunteer artist, Susan "The Sketcher" MacLeod, attended the exciting launch of R is for Reparations. The one-of-a-kind alphabet book was written by Halifax youth at Halifax North Memorial Public Library during African Heritage Month 2018, and shares their hopes and dreams about the global demand for redress, compensation and restitution for the horrors of the Atlantic Slave Trade.
In honour of the Library’s The Color Purple event series, and Alice Walker’s 75th birthday, we sat down with Evelyn C. White, journalist, relatively new Haligonian, and official biographer of Alice Walker: A Life. Halifax Public Libraries was honoured to be able to spend time with Evelyn and learn more about her career and her relationship with Alice Walker, and to discuss all things The Color Purple.
