Measuring Halifax Public Libraries' Social Impact
The Canadian Urban Libraries Council/Conseil des Bibliothèques Urbaines du Canada, opens a new window (CULC/CBUC) and 26 Canadian Public Libraries participated in a national research project to better understand library impact on our communities.
The first-of-its-kind national study moves beyond conventional measurements like foot traffic, circulation or program attendance, and measures how library services impact the social well-being of community members.
Methodology
The national research included surveys with library users and non-users, and in-depth interviews. Impact is measured along four dimensions, including emotional, social, intellectual and creative impact, each capturing different aspects of the library experience.

Sharing your stories
Throughout the report, you'll see stories that reflect your library experience: Evan enjoys discovering books that he would not have found without the Collection; Amina uses the Spaces for deep, focused work and meetings and appreciates support from Staff; Sophia finds that the Programs reflect the community, allowing her to explore new cultures and nurture her intellect.
These are just some of the ways Halifax Public Libraries make meaningful differences in our communities.
