February 10, 2025 was a day filled with pride, joy and honour for Lara McAllister, Community Navigator at Alderney Gate Public Library. She, and other notable Nova Scotians were celebrated with the King Charles III Coronation Medal for their contribution to their communities. The nomination, in part, recognized Lara's commitment to community partnerships and personalized approach to community needs—this work is often invisible and challenging.
On any given day, Lara may connect someone experiencing homelessness to shelter, help navigate a complex system or listen and ask questions when someone feels unseen; Lara's work exemplifies Library workers at their best. Lara’s work, and the work of all Community Navigators at Halifax Public Libraries, deeply impact our community.
"I felt so honoured to be recognized along-side other great community leaders and volunteers. I am proud that Halifax Public Libraries is able to do this work and make such meaningful impact on individual lives," Lara shares.
About the King Charles III Coronation Medal
The King Charles III Coronation Medal was introduced in 2024 to commemorate the coronation of His Majesty, King Charles III. Only 30,000 Canadians receive the distinction, making it a rare and prestigious honour. Prominent Canadians and institutions were invited to nominate individuals from their communities. Claudia Chender, NDP Leader and MLA for Dartmouth South presented Lara with the Medal at a special ceremony at Province House.
