Family English Learning Support Volunteers

Family English Learning Support (FELS)
At Halifax Public Libraries, we believe learning happens everywhere—not just in school. Our free Family English Learning Support (FELS) program helps newcomer parents and their children (ages 6-16) build skills, confidence, and community connections.
When families sign up, parents and children are matched with their own volunteer tutors. Each week, they meet at the same time and place, in separate sessions, so that both adult and child can focus on their own learning goals.
How Volunteers Help
As a FELS tutor, you will:
- Support either a parent or a child in reaching their learning goals, such as English conversation, literacy, and technology learning.
- Be a positive role model, offering encouragement and patience.
- Use conversation, books, games, and activities to build skills and confidence.
- Help newcomer families feel welcomed and supported in their new community.
Sessions are welcoming and informal, designed to make learning meaningful and engaging. Families attend once a week for 1.5 hours at Halifax North Memorial Public Library.
Who We're Looking For
We are seeking volunteers who:
- Are at least 18 years of age.
- Enjoy working with children or adults (we will match you appropriately).
- Are friendly, reliable, and patient.
- Have good communication skills.
- Are flexible and creative in supporting learning needs.
- Are interested in supporting newcomer families.
- Can commit to 2-3 volunteer hours per week.
