Meet Moriah
Hello, Library world!
My name is Moriah, and I am grateful to have joined the Central Library team as this year’s Lou Duggan Creative Studio Librarian Intern.
I recently graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master’s of Information, concentrating in Library and Information Science and Environmental Studies!
My path to librarianship has been winding. With degrees in both English Literature and Journalism, I began my working life as a writer and editor for print magazines. I also spent time working as a flight attendant, at several low-waste stores, as a yoga instructor, and for 15 years in the cosmetics industry.
My passions and pastimes are similarly sprawling. I have a love for low-waste, minimal living, and thoroughly enjoy reading anything by Margaret Atwood, David Bergen, or Haruki Murakami (but also literally any book). I consider myself an amateur enthusiast of photography, videography, and video editing, as well as sketching, painting, and creative writing; so naturally, I’m drawn to Library service in the Lou Duggan Creative Studio.
The Studio is, first and foremost, a public makerspace that supports creativity and community. Yet, I also view the space as inherently green and environmentally sustainable. Although sustainability may not be the primary intention of the space, its natural functions facilitate the sharing of tools and resources, support skill-building and repair, and reduce consumption. In this way, I connect with the Studio on both creative and environmental levels.
Along with programming in the Lou Duggan Creative Studio, I am looking forward to learning from my fellow Library staff and gaining insights into all aspects of Halifax Public Libraries. I hope this has given you a read on who I am and how I arrived at the Library. See you around the Studio, and in the stacks!
About the Lou Duggan Creative Studio
Halifax Central Library’s Lou Duggan Creative Studio is a public makerspace where people are invited to learn, discover, create, and share. The makerspace officially opened in 2020, and features 3D printers, cooking equipment, crafting supplies, sewing machines and Cricut Cutters available for all ages, free of charge. The space and internship were generously supported by Lou Duggan, a professional librarian and a friend to all. His commitment to life-long learning, curiosity, and meaningful library internships is honoured every day in the Lou Duggan Creative Studio, 2nd Floor, Halifax Central Library.
