Proud Pride 2018 Moments

A Space for Every Story

Year-round, the Library is proud to be a welcoming, supportive, and safe space for everyone. We stand as an ally for our LGBTQ+ community, working to reflect all aspects of our beautiful and diverse communities through programs, events, resources, branch displays, and collections year-round.

This year, we hosted a variety of events in honour of Halifax Pride 2018, ranging from lively events like RuPaul's Drag Race Trivia and Fabulous Fantastic Storytime with Rouge Fatale and the Ukulady, to reflective discussions and sharing sessions like Venus Envy's Reading Out Loud.

As always, we were thrilled to be part of Halifax Pride, opens a new window's annual Pride Parade on July 21.

Pixelated Pride: The Birth of a Unicorn

It all started with a simple email.

“I kind of want to make the van its own unicorn costume…”  Elinor Crosby, Branch Manager of Halifax North Public Library, and long-time Pride Parade Marshall for the Library, wrote to us. Our team in Marketing & Communications gladly took the glittery bait.

We’ve been polishing our presence in the parade for a few years now, adding custom Pride t-shirts, inviting more and more staff to participate, and recently, adding our Library-branded van to our parade crew. But this year, we reached a new level of magical, and we're never going back. This is the year that Pixie was born.

We made the van into an adorable unicorn and then ran with the theme. We had unicorns on our t-shirts and placards, our parade crew wore horns and we gave away unicorn stickers as Pixie pranced through the streets in all her sparkly splendor. Why? Because we want everyone to recognize and celebrate their uniqueness while living their own fairytale.

The floors in our Marketing & Communications Department still have a sparkle to them. Birthing a unicorn is messy business.
