Farewell to a Fond Friend, Sophie the Dog

Paws to Read Volunteer pup, Sophie, has passed away

We are sad to pass along the news that Sophie, Woodlawn Public Library's beloved friend, virtual Storytime star, and Paws to Read pup, passed away shortly after Christmas. Sophie and her owner Judy had been volunteering at Woodlawn and with the Library virtually for the past five years in our literacy programs.

Sophie was much loved by the children in our Paws to Read program, our staff, and community members. She delighted everyone by dressing up in special costumes for her virtual Storytime with Sophie programs. Sophie was a calming presence when she visited the branch, and her friendly, easy manner brought a smile to many when she was there. She lived a long and happy life helping people, and we are all fortunate to have known her. We send warmth and condolences to Judy and her family, and deep gratitude for sharing Sophie's gifts with all of us.

A message from Therapeutic Paws of Canada:

Please join us in sending appreciation and best wishes to "Sophie", a cherished member of the Therapy Dogs of TPOC Halifax. Sophie passed away on December 28, 2021 after many years of pet therapy work across the Halifax Regional Municipality.  Sophie, a beautiful Golden Retriever, achieved her initial certification as a TPOC Therapy Dog in 2012. Sophie, and her handler Judy, visited many nursing homes, schools, universities, offices and libraries over the past 9 years. Many children practiced their skills by reading aloud to Sophie at Halifax Public Libraries. Sophie also regularly dropped in at offices of the Halifax Regional Police to shake a paw. Thank you, Sophie, for all the comfort you have given to young and old throughout our community. Rest in Peace.
