Across the Universe is the first book in the popular trilogy by Beth Revis, of which the third and final novel, Shades of Earth, has recently been released. It has received a lot of praise, and I am glad to say that I was not disappointed.

It is a dystopian sci-fi book set on the spaceship Godspeed which has been flying for several hundred years towards a planet deemed acceptable for human habitation. Hidden down in the lower levels of the massive ship are people who have been specially chosen to aid in the occupation of this faraway planet, and cryogenically frozen until landing on the planet.

Amy, however, is violently woken up before the landing, and almost dies in the process. Her parents (who were the reason why she was on the voyage in the first place) remain frozen. She must deal with the fact that someone tried to kill her by unfreezing her, and could do the same to her parents. One of the few friends she makes is Elder, the next in line to be the leader of Godspeed, and together they attempt to find out who is trying to get rid of the cryogenically frozen passengers, as well as deal with the corrupt leader of the ship.

The storyline progresses at a good pace; it never feels rushed or dragged out. Everything seemed incredibly realistic despite the unrealistic setting. No matter how outrageous an idea, everything was introduced in a way that made it seem plausible.

Overall, I quite enjoyed the book. At first, I found that I was confused about what exactly was going on in Godspeed, but everything was explained before too long. I will use an incredibly awful and predictable pun and say that it was out of this world. I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.
