Meeting a New Friend by Angela, Teen Blogger

A Step From Heaven- book coverIt was a few months ago when I first met Jiyoung. It was on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Canada Games Center. She was with her brother (who is my friend) and I was surprised at their resemblance. She didn’t speak much English so I tried to use actions and simple sentences to help her understand. She seemed cool, and I could feel a connection with her right away.

I saw her again the next day at the Canada Games Center, and our friendship began. As a new friend, I helped her explore life in Halifax. She talked about life in Korea, and it was totally different from the Canadian lifestyle. I really learned a lot about the school system in Korea, and about Korean culture. Jiyoung told me that she thought Canada (especially Halifax) was a quiet and peaceful place, and she liked it. One place I recommended she go during her visit was the library. The library has lots of information and can be very helpful for newcomers to Canada.

The last time I saw Jiyoung we went to the mall together. She wanted to buy souvenirs for her friends overseas, so I was glad to accompany her. We strolled around the mall without doing much shopping and I wondered if the malls here were just not her style because she couldn’t find any store that interested her. Finally, I dragged her into a girls’ store, and was relieved when she seemed to find all sorts of cute things to buy.

As I had promised, we went to the Oval to skate afterward. Canada is famous for all sort of things, and thanks to our intense cold weather, we have the opportunity to skate in winter. She was better at skating than I expected, and was able to loop around. It was only her second or third time skating and I was very impressed!

Jiyoung went back to Korea at the beginning of March, kind of unnoticed except by me. Her school year was starting and she was going into grade 10. During the three weeks she spent in Halifax she learned a lot about Canadian language and culture. I sincerely wish the best for her, and hope that one day she’ll be able to come to Canada and be among us again.
