Fast Five: Soccer Books - Article by Danielle, Staff Blogger

As we head into a big soccer/football weekend with the 2014 FIFA World Cup Third-place and Final matches, I thought that I would leave you with a quick list of five books featuring and/or about soccer:

1. Compulsion, by Heidi Ayarbe

2. Kick, by Walter Dean Myers & Ross Workman

3. Now is the Time for Running, by Michael Williams

Now is the Time for Running Book Cover"Just down the road from their families, Deo and his friends play soccer in the dusty fields of Zimbabwe, cheered on by Deo's older brother, Innocent. It is a day like any other...until the soldiers arrive and Deo and Innocent are forced to run for their lives, fleeing the wreckage of their village for the distant promise of safe haven. Along the way, they face the prejudice and poverty that await refugees everywhere, and must rely on the kindness of people they meet to make it through. But when tragedy strikes, Deo's love of soccer is all he has left. Can he use that gift to find hope once more?" --From the publisher.

4. Tangerine, by Edward Bloor

Tangerine Book Cover"Paul Fisher sees the world from behind glasses so thick he looks like a bug-eyed alien. But he’s not so blind that he can’t see there are some very unusual things about his family’s new home in Tangerine County, Florida. Where else does a sinkhole swallow the local school, fire burn underground for years, and lightning strike at the same time every day?

With all this chaos compounded by constant harassment from his football-star brother, adjusting to life in Tangerine isn’t easy for Paul—until he joins the soccer team at his middle school. With the help of his new teammates, Paul discovers what lies beneath the surface of his strange new hometown. And he also gains the courage to face up to some secrets his family has been keeping from him for far too long.

In Tangerine, it seems, anything is possible." --From the publisher.

5. Soccer for Dummies, by Tom Dunmore and Scott Murray

Soccer for Dummies Book Cover"Learn the basics, improve your game knowledge, and reach your soccer playing goals.

Do you get a kick out of soccer? Whether you're a youth league player, a soccer parent, or a World Cup fan, here at last is the book you've been waiting for. Now updated with the latest history, stats, and rules of this popular sport, Soccer For Dummies is the ultimate guide to the greatest and most popular sport on the planet." --From the publisher.
