About the Cobequid Past & Future Project

The Cobequid Past & Future Project is a collaboration between Bedford and Sackville Public Libraries to preserve local history and generate new stories for future generations. Local residents brought scrapbooks, photos, presentations, and memories to share with the Library and a lively, colourful vision of Cobequid past emerged.

The Cobequid region includes the communities of Sackville, Bedford, Fall River, Waverley, Beaver Bank, Timberlea, and Hubley. The Cobequid Past & Future Project had 2 components; Storylines, an initiative to preserve local history, and the Cobequid Workshop & Speaker Series. Events ranged from sessions on the history of the Bedford Basin, to a story-writing competition for youth, to an exploration of Mi’kmaq traditional and spiritual cultures.

Memories of Cobequid Past

Throughout 2017, we gathered stories from Cobequid community members to create a virtual time capsule. Memories of the river, the racing track, the Sackville Drive-In, and Saturday night dances at the Bedford Yacht Club are among the stories told by short-term and lifetime residents of the community.

Support

The Cobequid Past & Future Project was made possible by the Province of Nova Scotia in partnership with the Department of Communities, Culture, and Heritage. The Library is fortunate to have the support of local councillors, Fultz House Museum, Scott Manor Museum, the Community Health Team, and the local business community.
