Sew it Goes: Create, Mend, and Make

Written by staff member Heather, Programming and Community Engagement

Want to make your clothes fit better? Transform a thrifted item into something wonderful to wear or gift? Or perhaps make something from scratch and try out a new hobby? You can do all those things with Keshen Goodman Public Library’s new Community Sewing Machine!

Generously donated by the Lou Duggan Creative Studio at Halifax Central Library, this Singer Heavy Duty machine is free to use, beginner-friendly, and stocked with all the essentials to get you started. At our launch event on May 9, 2025, the space was alive with the hum of ideas (and actual sewing), and we can’t wait to see what you make next.

How it Works

First-time users must complete a quick orientation. To sign up, visit Keshen Goodman in person or call (902) 490-5738.

Once you’ve completed the orientation, you can book a Study Room and the sewing machine at the same time—again, free of charge—by visiting the Information Desk or calling the same number.

Appointments are available in two-hour time slots.

What’s Included

Along with the sewing machine, you’ll have access to a well-stocked sewing kit filled with tools and accessories (or “notions” to sewists), including:

  • Thread and bobbins

  • Large and small scissors

  • Measuring tape

  • Seam ripper and needle threader

  • Hand sewing needle and thimble

  • Iron and small ironing board

  • Zipper, buttonhole, all-purpose, and walking feet

  • Pins, extra needles, and other small tools

What to Bring

You’ll need to bring your own sewing or mending project. We recommend cutting your pieces ahead of time and bringing instructions with you. If you’re altering clothing, come with a plan for the changes you want to make.

Inspiration & Resources

Sewing has many steps—from choosing a project, to gathering materials, to finishing your seams—and it’s much easier when you have a guide. Halifax Public Libraries has you covered with books, e-resources, and streaming content.

The Sewing Book

You can also find sewing and quilting magazines, TV shows, and step-by-step tutorials on hoopla and OverDrive/Libby, plus a treasure trove of how-to videos on YouTube.

We’ve even created our own YouTube playlist just for using and troubleshooting the new machine.

Community Success Stories

Our new sewing machine has already been put to great use. So far, we’ve seen:

  • Pat crafting a custom neoprene gear cover to protect against wet weather.

  • April hemming a summer skirt that had been waiting for attention for several years.

  • Safa sewing adorable homemade clothes for her children.

From practical mending to personal creativity, the possibilities are endless—and we love seeing the variety of projects taking shape.

Your Turn

Whether you want to hem pants, mend a beloved piece, make a gift, or start from scratch, our Community Sewing Machine is here to help you bring your vision to life.

So, what will you make? Book your spot today, and don’t forget to share your creations on social media—tag us @hfxpublib so we can celebrate your work!
