Programming and Legacy Projects

Members of the African Nova Scotian community are invited to submit proposals within the following areas of focus:

Virtual programming

Programming is being offered virtually this year, with the understanding that if in-person events are allowed in February 2021, we would look for opportunities to convert some virtual events to in-person events. You are invited to submit a proposal for a program that can be delivered effectively online. While applications can be shared via the submission form, we also encourage you to contact us to discuss alternative formats.

Legacy projects

We invite proposals for legacy projects to be housed within an African Heritage Month digital platform created by Halifax Public Libraries or within our circulating collection. Possible legacy projects could include a research project that will ultimately be made available to residents in printed or digital format, or a recorded interview (audio or video). These legacy projects should be launched during or immediately following the February/March 2021 AHM celebrations. A launch event for legacy projects could be included as part of proposals. While applications can be shared via the submission form, we also encourage you to contact us to discuss alternative formats. We would like to encourage proposals from youth in this area.

Art installations for branch and community

African Nova Scotian creators from all backgrounds can propose an installation in branches or in community spaces that is self-guided and that is accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. Creators are welcome to submit a proposal for a virtual program or recording that will accompany their work. While applications can be shared via the submission form, we also encourage you to contact us to discuss alternative formats. A limited number of projects in this area will be accepted.

Artist in Residence

We are seeking proposals from African Nova Scotian artists who can work on a series of virtual engagement sessions with the public over a 6-8 week period. Artists will be asked to demonstrate their ability to lead a series of dynamic online workshops working within this year’s theme (Black History Matters: Listen, Learn, Share, Act). Proposals should demonstrate the ability to propose and work within a reasonable budget to plan and deliver accessible public programs over an extended period of time. This program aims to engage residents each week throughout the months of February and March in creative educational activities and important community discussions. Proposals can be in video or written format, and while examples previous work are appreciated, a formal CV is not required. One artist will be selected for this residency.
