Teen Volunteer Opportunities

We want you. The Library wants your ideas, curiosity, and enthusiasm for helping others. In return, not only will your volunteering make a significant difference in your community, you will:

  • meet new friends, 
  • learn new skills, and 
  • form a good looking resume, for jobs or school.

Leading Readers

Youth Work

Ages 15-18 

Who are you helping? We’ll pair you with 1 elementary school-aged kid who is having a hard time with reading. 

What will you be doing? For 1 hour per week, you’re leading a virtual hang out with your learner. Together, you're reading, playing educational games, and exploring books through fun activities.

Who are you? An avid reader, patient and kind with kids, and good at making things fun. 

Are you available? We hope your schedule is a match. Here are the current openings for in-person and virtual session you'll need to select on your application form.

Sackville Public Library
Tuesdays, 3:45 - 4:45 PM
October 4 - December 6
To register, drop into the library to pick up an application.
Application period is September 1-16.

More locations for Leading Readers will be added in late August and early September.

Kindness Postcards

Community Care Work

Ages 13-17

Who are you helping? Community members who are in need of a little extra care. Not everyone can frequent the Library, but everyone can know we care about them. Taking time to reach out is a way to open connections and show our support.

What will you be doing? For 1.5 hours a week, you can create designs for the postcard fronts and/or write messages on the back. Design hours can be spent at home or in-person at Cole Harbour Public Library and writing can be done in-person. Your inspiring postcards will be sent out to various homes, centres, and hospitals in the area. 

Who are you? You are someone with a passion for community wellness and connecting with people. A creative person who enjoys the act of writing or designing.

Society Shapers

Community Development Work

Ages 13-18 

Who are you helping? Yourself - in order to help others. The Library wants you to invest in yourself. We'll guide you through project planning and funding applications. 

What will you be doing? For 1-5 hours/week, you’re developing your own project to support others in your community. We’ll help you write a grant application and promote your project. We'll guide you through the process of becoming a Society Shaper.

Who are you? A future community leader with ideas, dedication, and in need of support to make your project happen.

Tell us about your ideas. Include a brief description of what your project idea(s) is when submitting your application.

Program Assistant

Ages 14-18

Who are you helping? ​Members of your community, from families to children to adults to youth like you, who come to the Library for various programs.

What will you be doing? That depends on where you want to volunteer. As 2022 progresses, we will place here what is happening and where.

Alderney Gate
Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays | 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
July 2 - August 30
In person, you will be assisting with the preparation and implementation of various events and programs for children and youth at the library.

Halifax Central
All positions are filled for the summer session, June 29 - August 27. Check back in September.

Keshen Goodman
Thursdays, 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
September 29 - December 15 2022
In person, you will be assisting with the preparation and implementation of various events and programs for children and youth at the library. You will be expected to volunteer with programs on a few Saturdays throughout the session.
Application period for the fall-winter session is August 15 - September 15.

Sackville Public Library
Thursdays, 3:30 - 4:30 PM
Saturdays, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
October 1 - December 10
Application period is September 1-23.

Who are you? You are creative and artistic, friendly and welcoming, and able to work both independently and as a part of a bigger team.

Teen Advisory Council

Community Development Work

Ages 14-18

Who are you helping? Teens who are excited by what the Library does for the community and will thrive in a safe and engaging community space that reflects their interest and values.

What will you be doing? For 1 hour per week, from October to December 2022, you will be meeting in-person with other members of the Teen Advisory Council to plan book displays, create artwork, and to help run and develop youth events. You will help shape what teens will experience at Central Library.

Who are you? You are a team player and consensus builder who is community minded and looking for leadership opportunities.

Teen Podcast

Communications Work

Ages 14-18 

Who are you helping? Youth, like you, who want to find expression, be reflected, and have a voice in the wider community. 

What will you be doing? For 1-3 hours/week, from October to December 2022, you will be creating segments of audio content, such as interviews and commentaries, for our youth-led podcast. 

Who are you? A budding communications professional, natural storyteller, and team player.

Teen Talk

Communications Work

Ages 13-17

Who are you helping? Youth, like you, who want to find expression, be reflected, and have a voice in the wider community through your appreciation for Young Adult books.

What will you be doing? For 1-3 hours a week, you will record in audio your thoughts on a book you have read for use in a Teen Podcast episode. Your contribution can be recorded at home or in-person at the Cole Harbour Public Library and it can follow any style, from a general summary of the book to a Q&A style.

Who are you? You are someone with a passion for reading and talking about what you are reading. A person who is working towards becoming more vocal and expressive.

Video Game Assistant

Who are you helping? Every day, children ages 5-14 get excited about using the Library's video games. Some kids might be familiar with the systems, and some may not due to access or age. 

What will you be doing? You will be volunteering for 4 shifts per month lasting 2 hours each in July and August. During your shifts, you will be assisting with video game set-up and troubleshooting in the children's area.

Who are you? You are comfortable operating a Playstation 4 and know your way around an assortment of video games. You like interacting with children ages 5-14 in a busy environment.
