Q. What types of questions will be answered?
A.
For questions requiring a brief, factual answer, staff will provide the answer directly to you, along with the source(s) of where the answer was found.
For more complex questions, including medical, legal and consumer information, you will receive guidance on how to research the topic.

Q. Do I have to be a member of Halifax Public Libraries in order to use Ask a Librarian?
A. No, we are pleased to offer this service to all visitors to e-branch.

Q. How quickly can I expect a response?
A. Ask a Librarian staff will make every effort to respond within 24 hours (Tuesday to Saturday). If you need a more immediate response, please use our telephone information service (902) 490-5710.

Q. Can I access genealogical information via Ask a Librarian?
A.
Staff can provide limited genealogical research assistance via e-mail. For more in-depth research, call (902) 490-5710 or visit the Spring Garden Road Reference Department.

In your e-mail inquiry, please include

  • the person's full name
  • any important dates (e.g., birth, death),
  • community,
  • and the specific information that you're searching for.

We will also search for obituaries. The limit is 3 names per request.

The minimum charge for photocopies is $5.00 (includes up to 10 photocopies and mailing costs).  Please do not send money in advance.
