Ava the Inventor: A Musquodoboit Valley Success Story

Halifax Public Libraries strives to inspire people of all ages to make a difference in their community. That's why we are pleased to share some exciting news about Ava, a young inventor and Library lover from Musquodoboit Valley!

Coming up on its 5th anniversary, our Musquodoboit Valley Library Office has done an amazing job at finding new and innovative ways to provide library services to people in rural communities. Thank you Musquodoboit Valley Library for helping to inspire young people such as Ava, and giving us many reasons to celebrate and share local success stories!

Ava's invention

Ava’s mom, Jolene Gross, reached out to our staff at the Musquodoboit Valley Library Office to tell us a bit about her daughter, and share an amazing opportunity that she is taking part in.

“We received word from Little Inventors, opens a new window, based out of the UK, that Ava’s submission of the “Cleaner Picker Upper, opens a new window” from March 2020 has been chosen to be brought to life. They have paired Ava with a physicist with animatronic/3D building skills to work with Ava to make a model of her ocean cleaning invention!”

Ava's idea for the Little Inventor's theme, "Protect Our Oceans, opens a new window," was selected from over 500 ideas to be brought to life. It will be part of a unique online exhibition launching in May 2021 as part of Science Odyssey week, and it will also celebrate the launch of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development in 2021. Little Inventors is also working in partnership with the Government of Canada’s Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) to document Ava’s experience.

“We are very thrilled and extremely proud of Ava. It is going to be quite an adventure finding out our next steps with them.”

Thanks to proud mom Jolene for sharing this news with us, and a big congratulations to Ava for her achievement!
