Sept façons de découvrir des ressources en français

Saviez-vous qu’à Halifax, le français est la langue maternelle de plus de 10 000 personnes et que plus de 30 000 personnes utilisent régulièrement le français à la maison, au travail ou à l'école? De plus, plus de 12 % de la population d'Halifax s'identifie comme bilingue anglais-français. Que vous soyez francophone, que vous redécouvriez votre héritage acadien à travers la langue, que vous ne parliez pas français mais que vous aidiez un membre de votre famille inscrit à un programme en français, ou que vous souhaitiez simplement apprendre le français, la lecture en français est parfois bien plus qu'un simple passe-temps divertissant. En tant que professionnelle travaillant en français avec un enfant inscrit dans une école du Conseil scolaire acadien provincial, je dois fréquemment rechercher des documents en français de toutes sortes et j’ai découvert diverses façons d'emprunter du matériel en français dans nos bibliothèques publiques locales.

1. Recherche dans le catalogue

L'option « Advanced Search » (Recherche avancée), située sous la barre de recherche, permet aux lecteurs de raffiner leur recherche. Dans l'option de langue, si vous sélectionnez « French » (Français), la recherche se limitera aux documents en français.

2. Prêts entre bibliothèques

Si le document que vous recherchez n'est disponible dans aucune de nos succursales, vous pouvez faire une demande de prêt entre bibliothèques. Notre personnel passera au crible les bibliothèques de tout le Canada pour trouver votre livre ou votre film.

3. Suggestion d'achat

Si l'ouvrage que vous recherchez est déjà publié et disponible en Amérique du Nord, mais ne figure pas dans la collection des bibliothèques, vous pouvez également faire une suggestion d’achat. Vous pouvez suggérer jusqu’à deux documents imprimés ou physiques (livres, DVD, CD, documents spécialisés, etc.) par mois et un nombre illimité de documents numériques (livres électroniques, livres audio) via la fonction « Notify Me » (Avisez-moi) de l'application Libby.

4. Rechercher des livres électroniques en français avec l'application Libby/OverDrive

Libby est une application gratuite d'OverDrive qui vous permet d'emprunter des livres électroniques, des livres audio et des magazines numériques dans diverses langues.

Vous pouvez télécharger l'application Libby sur votre appareil mobile avec Apple App Store, opens a new window ou Google Play, opens a new window. Si vous possédez un ordinateur Windows, un Mac ou un Chromebook, vous pouvez utiliser Libby dans votre navigateur Web à l'adresse libbyapp.com, opens a new window.

Une fois inscrit ou connecté, vous pouvez cliquer sur l'icône de recherche, puis sur « Advanced Search » (Recherche avancée), ce qui vous permettra de sélectionner le français dans le menu déroulant des langues. En lançant une recherche à ce stade, vous verrez s’afficher tous les documents en français disponibles dans la collection Overdrive. Vous pouvez également raffiner votre recherche à l'aide des autres options de recherche disponibles sur la page de recherche, ou à l'aide des filtres situés à gauche de l'écran une fois votre recherche lancée.

5. Parcourez les journaux et magazines français avec PressReader

PressReader, opens a new window vous donne accès au contenu intégral de journaux et de magazines provenant de plus de 120 pays et disponibles dans plus de 60 langues. Il est accessible depuis votre ordinateur, votre tablette ou votre appareil mobile.

Une fois inscrit ou connecté, vous pouvez cliquer sur l'icône de recherche, puis sur « Advanced Search » (Recherche avancée), ce qui vous permettra de sélectionner le français dans le menu des langues. Vous devez toutefois entrer des mots-clés pour lancer votre recherche. Vous pouvez également effectuer une recherche simple « Basic Search » avec des termes tels que « French Newspapers » (journaux français) et parcourir les résultats à partir de là.

Depuis février 2023, l'application PressReader propose une fonctionnalité de traduction automatique qui permet de traduire la plupart du contenu dans la langue de votre choix. Assurez-vous d’avoir déjà téléchargé la langue de votre choix sur votre téléphone, puis suivez ces étapes simples pour l'activer :

• Dans l'application, ouvrez la publication de votre choix.
• Cliquez sur le titre que vous souhaitez lire en mode de texte. Appuyez sur les trois points et sélectionnez « Translate » (Traduire).
• Si l'option de traduction accessible via les trois points n'apparaît pas, vous devrez peut-être activer la fonction de traduction à l'aide de l'icône de traduction située en bas à droite de l'application lorsque vous êtes en mode de texte. Cela devrait également vous permettre d'activer la traduction automatique à l'avenir (cette fonction peut également être activée ou désactivée dans les « Settings » [Paramètres]).

L'Espace Radio-Canada, opens a new window propose une grande variété de contenu de Radio-Canada, en anglais et en français. Une fois la ressource ouverte, vous pouvez passer au français (interface et contenu) sur la page en haut à droite.

Seven Ways to Explore French Materials

Did you know that in Halifax, French is the mother tongue of over 10,000 people and over 30,000 people use French regularly at home, at work, or at school? Moreover, over 12% of the population in Halifax self-identify as English French bilingual. Whether you are a French-speaker, someone rediscovering their Acadian heritage through the language, a non-French speaker helping a family member attending a French-language program, or someone interested in learning French, reading in French is sometimes more than an entertaining pastime. As a professional working in French with a child in the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial school system, I have to frequently search for French documents of all kinds and have discovered various ways of borrowing French materials from our local public libraries.

1. Search the Catalogue

The Advanced Search option under the Search bar allows readers to narrow down their search. In the language option, choosing "French" will focus the search only among French materials.

2. Interlibrary Loans

If the item you are looking for is not in any of the branches, you can place an Interlibrary Loan. Staff will scour libraries across Canada looking for your book or movie.

3. Suggestion for Purchase

If the item you are looking for is already in print and released in North America but not in the Library collection, you can also make a suggestion for purchase. You can suggest up to two print/physical items (books, DVDs, CDs, specialty items, etc.) each month and unlimited digital items (e-books, audiobooks) via the Libby app's "Notify Me" function.

4. Search French e-books with the Libby App/OverDrive

Libby is a free app by OverDrive that lets you borrow e-books, audiobooks, and digital magazines in a variety of languages.

You can download the Libby app on your mobile device from the Apple App Store, opens a new window or Google Play, opens a new window. If you have a Windows computer, Mac computer, or a Chromebook, you can use Libby in your web browser at libbyapp.com, opens a new window.

Once registered/logged in, you can click on the Search icon, and then on "Advanced Search", which will allow you to select French from the Languages drop-down menu. Executing a search at that point will display all of the French language materials we have in the Overdrive collection. You can also narrow down your search via the other search options on the Search page, or via the Filters on the left side of the screen once you execute your search.

5. Browse French newspapers and magazines with PressReader

PressReader, opens a new window provides access to full-content newspapers and magazines from over 120 countries in more than 60 languages and is available on your computer, tablet, or mobile device.

Once registered/logged in, you can click on the Search icon, and then on "Advanced Search", which will allow you to select French from the Languages menu. You do have to enter search terms to begin your search. Alternatively, you can just do a Basic Search for things like "French Newspapers" and browse from there.

As of February 2023, the PressReader app has added an Auto-Translate feature, which can translate most of the content into your preferred language. Ensure you have your preferred language already downloaded on your phone, and then follow the simple steps to activate it:

• In the app, open your desired publication.
• Click on the title you want to read in Text View. Tap on the three dots and select Translate.
• If you don't see the option to translate via the three dots, you may need to turn on Translation via the translation icon near the bottom right of the app when in Text View. This should also give you the option to turn on Auto-Translation going forward (which can also be turned on and off via Settings).

6. Stream French movies with Kanopy

Kanopy, opens a new window offers a wide range of independent and international films to stream for free.

Once registered/logged in, you can click Search, and then select French from the Audio Languages filter and/or from the Subtitle Languages.

7. Stay in tuned with L'Espace Radio-Canada

CBC Corner, opens a new window offers a wide variety of CBC content in both English and French. Once you open the resource, you have an option to toggle to French (interface and content) in the top right.
