Kick-Start Creativity: Driftwood Art

Craft by Sandra P., staff member, Keshen Goodman Public Library

Let your imagination carry you away to creation and kick-start your creativity. Bring summer into your home all year round with beautiful works of art made with found driftwood.

Supplies needed

  • Driftwood
  • String or yarn
  • Items to decorate (feathers, beads, glitter, leaves, etc.)
  • Glue
  • Optional: Screws and hooks for hanging

Step 1: Find your driftwood

Find a piece of driftwood on your next beach day, or a branch while on a wooded trail walk.  Look for a uniquely shaped piece of wood, or just something that inspires you.

Step 2: Add attachments to hang your art

For my piece, I was inspired to fashion a coat/hat rack with this piece of driftwood.  I attached hooks and placed some screws on the back in order to hang it on the wall.

You might want to hang your work on the wall, and you  can use screws and hooks or yarn and string to do so.

Step 3: Decorate

I decorated my wood with items I found around my home: some strings of beads and colourful yarn, along with a few feathers I found outside to add whimsy.

Look around your home for unusual items to glue or tie on to your piece of wood.  You might choose to paint your wood, or even add some glitter, for glam appeal.  Maybe you’ll add small pieces of driftwood or twigs to the outside of a recycled ja,r and pop in a colourful candle!

If canvas art is your thing, you could even glue your driftwood to a canvas and paint around it.

Step 4: Hang your art

Here is my finished piece, hanging on my wall with a few new friends.
