Get a Library Card?

To get a library card you need the following:

  • Two pieces of identification. One must have a unique ID number.
  • Proof of a mailing address.
  • A parent's signature if you are under 14 years of age.

Simply visit your local library or fill out the form below. You may also want to see our borrowing rules and Public Use of Computers policy before you join.

To apply for a card on-line:
Please fill in the form below and click on the Apply for Card button. You will receive confirmation when your application goes through.

Once we process your application, we will email out your library barcode number so that you can access our databases, book a library computer, or download audio or ebooks immediately. We will mail out your library card to you within a week. Once you receive your card, you can start borrowing library materials.

If applicant is 14 years of age or older:

I hereby apply for borrowing privileges at all Halifax Public Libraries branches. I agree to be responsible for the materials borrowed on my library card and to abide by the rules and regulations of Halifax Public Libraries.

If applicant is under 14 years of age:

I am the parent or legal guardian of the above named applicant and I hereby apply for borrowing privileges on his/her behalf. I understand that I am responsible for my child's use of any Halifax Public Libraries' services or facilities, including the borrowing of materials and the use of Library computers and the Internet. I agree to abide by the rules and regulations of Halifax Public Libraries and to take full responsibility for materials borrowed on this card.
